Michael Jackson has filed a lawsuit against concert promoter Marcel Avram to prevent arbitration over a disputed concert contract from 1999. Court papers show Michael, and his company MJ Company, have sued Avram and his German based company for breach of contract as well as seeking a preliminary injunction preventing the promoter from proceeding with arbitration according to the Associated Press.
Michael famously testified in a lawsuit involving this contract in 2002 in which Avram seeked $21 million after accusing him of backing out two New Year concerts in 1999. A Santa Barbara County jury ruled that Michael had to pay $5.3 million in March 2003 and both parties then reached a settlement agreement.
However, Avram has since decided to move forward with arbitration despite the 2003 settlement agreeing the disputes were to be resolved in Superior Court.
An arbitration hearing has been scheduled for October 24th, and Michael's lawsuit filed yesterday is now seeking an injunction to prevent this.
